Welcome back to 2012

This year looks like being a big one with our FCS Sparring team hard it in their preperation for the worlds best as they travel to Eurpoe for the Belgium Taekwondo Open on the 30-31st March 2012.  Some of our members have also participated in the advanced poomsae seminar held in Melbourne with Grand Master Kang head of the Korean National Poomsae Team.

There has been a slight change to the schedule for this year as we better accomodate our members, firtsly the Saturday morning classes will be split with the Peewee and Little Champions (3-8 years) starting their class at 9am and finishing at 9.30am (Peewees) and 9.45am (Little Champions), all Junior and Senior belts (White to Black) and ages 9 and over will start at 9.45am and finish at 10.45am and finally our Junior and Senior Black Belts will train at 10.45am and finish at 11.45am once per fortnight in our newly designed "BLACK BELT AND BEYOND" progam.

We have also made some changes to the Monday night schedule that effects all Junior (9-13 years) and Senior (14 and over)  members, we will be splitting the Juniors into their appropriate belt levels so that we can better prepare them for the gradings, the schedule will see all White and Yellow Belt Juniors start at 5.15pm and finish at 6pm, all Blue Belt Juniors start at 6 and finish at 6.45pm and all Red and Black Belt Juniors will start at 6.45 and finish at 7.30pm.  The seniors will then start at 7.30 and finish at 8.30pm for Monday nights only.  The Wednesday night schedule will remain the same as last term.  We have also scheduled some new day time classes on Monday and Wednesday at 10.15am to 11am for our members that are usually on night shift or parents looking to train for themselves without the children around.

For our FCS competition members there have been some changes firstly with the Poomsae team members the Friday night training sessions will start 15 minutes earlier at 4.45pm and finish at 5.30pm.  For the sparring members there will no longer be a class on Monday nights and we have added a new 2 hour class on Saturday afternoons at 2pm.

For term 1 there will be no Tuesday and Thursday Junior and Senior classes (5.15 to 9pm) at the Point Cook studio.

Christmas Party and Annual Presentation

Originally we planned the Christmas party to be held at Brimbank Gardens centrally located for all members.  After further discussions with the council we were advised that additional Marquees could not be erected, jumping castles could not be used and under cover BBQ space was on a first in basis.  Due to this we have changed the venue to the Point Cook studio due to its size over the Thomastown studio.  Additionally, in the event of rain we will have cover available to us.

The Christmas party and annual presentations will start at 10am and finish around 4pm on Sunday 4th December.  The address for all Thomastown members is 25 Wallace Avenue Point Cook just off the Forsyth Rd Exit on the Princess Hwy.

There will be lots of fun activities for everyone to enjoy as well as the opportunity to catch up with other members and their families.  We will also be drawing the Christmas raffle (be sure to sell lots of tickets).

The cost is $10 per family or $5 single.  This includes BBQ lunch, activities and refreshments.  Please register your attendance with member services by Monday 28th Novembers to ensure adequate catering.  Please also advise if there are any special dietary requirements that we need to be aware of.

VICTORIAN POOMSAE CHAMPIONSHIPS MAY 29TH 2011
Congratulatiuons to FCS Poomsae team members Stephanie and Alexandra who competed at the recent State Poomsae championships.  Your hard work and efforts at training have certainly paid off with a great result, 1 Gold and 1 Bronze.  Keep up the fantastic work.

Special request to club members to join our poomsae team.  At the moment our team is quite small, if any of our club members are interested in joining the squad please see Kelly or Allan and find out just how exciting and rewarding being a part of our poomsae team can be.

FIGHT NIGHT - ACADEMY V'S SA STATE TEAM

Congratulatiuons to FCS team members Schelby, Tommy, Luke, Kyle and Nic who travelled to Adelaide on Saturday 30th April to participate in the SA Extreme Team fight night.  Our members certainly made their presence felt with some awesome fights and memorable moments.  Schelby and Kyle totally dominated their opponents winning their matches with a great display of their skills.  Schelby went on to win the "Best Female Athlete" award for the night.  Luke put on a show and worked all his new skills to just loose the match by 1 point in the end.  Toomy took up the challenge and competed in 2 senior divisions and fought against a 2008 Olympic team member.  These were great fights and Tommy was awarded the "Fighters Spirit" award for his efforts.  Nic fought against the current National Heavy Weight Champion who eventually won the match, not too bad considering Nic hasn't competed for over 12 months.

All in all the experience was fantastic and a big thank you goes out to Andy Rutten for his hospitality and the South Australian (Taekwondo Australia Inc) Board members who officiated at the event.

US next as Luke Zahra wins taekwondo nationals

IT is the year that Luke Zahra truly arrived in taekwondo.

The sensation from Seabrook announced to the nation that he is one to watch in the future.

The 15-year-old qualified for the National Taekwondo Championships with a win at the Victorian selections.

Then, he went on to claim a gold medal at the nationals held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

"I was over the world," Zahra told the Weekly of the feeling of winning a national title.

"I was really happy, it made me feel proud."

The pride comes through the preparation.

The Taekwondo Academy student has juggled hours of study at

Williamstown High School with his

taekwondo commitments. "It's very hard work and a lot of training," Zahra said.

"We train about 10 to 15 hours a week and for about four or five days. It's very intense."

Zahra continues to listen and learn from coach and mentor Alan Malachowski.

"He has a big influence on me. He trains me real hard," he said.

If this was the year Zahra arrived, next year could be remembered for his departure from the country.

Zahra will compete in the US Open in Texas and will not be there merely to make up the numbers.

"I want to try and win that," he said, showing none of the self-doubts that crept into his fighting in past years.

"I'm not as nervous any more and I am more trusting in myself.

"I'd like to win, but I will be learning a lot, too."

PAN PACIFIC MASTERS GAMES RESULTS

Recently our senior members took part in the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the sunny Gold Coast.  The team consisted of Ted, Rob, Renee, David competing in the sparring divisions and Roxanne and Sally competing in the poomsae.  This was a great experience for everyone involved as it allowed our members to demonstrate their skills in an environment dedictaed to the 30+ athlete.  It was awesome to see these guys compete and as a result of their hard work and efforts; Rob, Ted, Renee and Sally took out the Gold medal with David taking home Silver.

Please note that the christmas party for this Sunday the 28th November has been cancelled and rescheduled to Sunday the 5th December in line with our Point Cook open day. Thanks for your understanding.

2010 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

It was a great effort from the FCS members who gave it their very best at the National Championships held at the AIS in Canberra.  The team was made up of both Poomsae and Sparring and all of them were there to challenge the rest of the country and stamp their names into the Australian Taekwondo history books.  First up was our poomsae team consisting of Alexandra, Stephanie and Brooke.  Alexandra won a Gold medal in the female Black Belt division and Brooke won a Silver in creative poomsae to music.....great work girls.  Next was the sparring team consisting of Schelby, Lachlan, Zach, Noah, Kyle, Tommy, Luke Billy, Jordon, Summer, Jamal, Adam, Moussah, Stephanie, James, Dylan, David, Jenny, Rob, Ted, Sarah, Carla, Cameron and Aisha.  There was some very serious competition as this year saw the introduction of the Taekwondo Australia National Rankings system (TAPS).  This ment that all black belts were ranked in Australia after the event.  The team did very well with Schelby, Tommy, Luke, David and Summer taking home the Gold, Ted, Carla, Noah, Aisha and Kyle winning Silver, then Rob, Billy, Zach and Jenny taking home the Bronze medal.  A fine performance for all that is only going to improve them for next years events.

The Pan Pacific Masters Games are being held on the sunny Gold Coast in November and some of our members are attending.  This time it's not our young guns competing but our more mature members making Taekwondo and in particular The Taekwondo Academy a very inclusive sport allowing all members regardless of age, the chance to be involved with Taekwondo competitions.

The team has been working extremely hard along side the FCS members in preperation for the event.  Our guys will be tackling both sides of Taekwondo and will compete in Poomsae and Sparring events.

There is nothing greater than to have others cheer you on and give you support for your effots so we encourage all members to pass on their well wishes to the team when you next see them at training.

You never know....this maybe all they need to get over the line in the end.

There is no doubt that there is a huge buzz around the club in the lead up to the National Championships.  Our team considered by many, as one of the best in the country has been working overtime in preperation for the event and getting ready for possibly the biggest martial arts competition to be held in Australia.

This year Taekwondo Australia is expecting over 1,500 competitors from accross Austrlia and overseas making the goal of becoming the National Champion for our members that little bit tougher but a whole lot more rewarding.

Watch our members and your frineds, prepare at our open FCS training sessions.  We know that once you see these guys train you will be in awe of their persistance and determination to become the country's best.

Good luck all team members and watch this space to find out the end results and see if you are training along side AUSTRALIAS BEST!

Luke Zahra: Kicking on to success

Luke Zahra is a boy in a hurry. The youngster out of the Taekwondo Academy in Point Cook is gearing up for a shot at the national championships in Canberra next month. The black belt student of master Alan Malachowski has impressed over the past two-and-a-half years in state and interstate sparring championships. The 14-year-old from Williamstown High School took his skills on to the international stage earlier this year when he represented Australia at the world taekwondo championships in Korea. That experience led to a gold medal at the Victorian selections, which qualified him for the nationals. Zahra has come a long way under the tuition of Malachowski, who says his charge has so much more to learn and achieve and will do it through his determination and perseverance.

Point Cook siblings show way to the top (Point Cook Leader 8th September 2010)

FIGHTS over the front passenger seat of the car or the TV remote-control take on a new dimension in the Malachowski household.

Siblings Lachlan and Schelby, aged 10 and 12, of Point Cook, are both taekwondo champions.

Both took up the sport aged three, with Lachlan competing since six and Schelby since five.

Both were recently selected to compete in the national titles in Canberra next month but it was in Korea representing their country in July that they were really able to show their prowess.

Schelby won bronze for sparring and gold for board breaking while Lachlan won gold for sparring and bronze for poomse (patterns).

They train at the Taekwondo Academy in Laverton where their coach, Allan, is their father.

?I wanted to try it out because my Dad had the school,? said Schelby.

?I didn't like the traditional side of it, I just liked the fighting side. It's more exciting. It's more fun.?

She said her ambition was to represent her country at the Commonwealth and Olympic games.

Lachlan and Schelby are this week's Wyndham Leader Sports Stars.

Lalor Taekwondo Kid Strikes Gold(Whittlesea Leader 30 October 2009)

JAMAL Kassem took up taekwondo less than two years ago but he's already won gold at the sport's national championships. The 11-year-old from Lalor won the blue belt division in his 8-13 year, 35-40kg category at the national championships in Brisbane at the start of the month (October 1-4).

Jamal won two state titles for the same category in May and August and since the national titles has graduated to become a red belt.  He trains four times a week at Taekwondo Academy, in Thomastown.  ?I enjoy being a member of a club and I've made lots of friends,? Jamal, in Grade 5 at the Australian International Academy, in North Coburg, said.

?I was very, very happy to win at the national championships. It was a surprise. I'd like to go as far as I can with taekwondo, I'd like to win at the world championships and go to the Olympics.?

Jamal followed his brother Adam, 9, into taekwondo and did regular training for about a year.

His coach, Allan Malachowski, suggested in February that he start sparring.

His father, Ali Kassem, said he was surprised how much Jamal had achieved in such a short time.  ?We're just thrilled. He's a good boy, he's a very bright kid and very committed,? Mr Kassem said.

* Jamal is this week's Whittlesea Leader Junior Sports Star nominee. To nominate someone in the junior, senior or services to sport categories, email whittlesea@leadernewspapers.com.auor phone 9433 1003.
